How do I know if I need a Corporate Identity or Corporate Image?

If you contact anyone outside of your company, business or organization, then you need a corporate identity.

The true power of a corporate identity is in consistency across all forms of outward communication with clients or customers. Your logo, website, contact information and slogan should be worked into your business cards, letter head, brochures, website and office documents.

If you haven't addressed any of these items before now, then now is a perfect time to start your corporate identity process. If you have questions or need help in accessing your corporate identity needs, feel free to contact a WSI representative or designer at either our Ames, Iowa (Midwest) or Fort Myers, Florida (Southeast) offices.

What if I already have a Corporate Identity, but it is outdated and needs a fresh look?

A good corporate identity will last between 15-20 years on average. This timeframe is based on a consistency in services, products and business model.  Changes in business direction or product focus can lead to the need to readdress your corporate identity.

WSI can revamp your current corporate identity. Perhaps your business has changed focus, and your original logo doesn't fit with your new focus. WSI can take elements of your old logo, and implement new elements, essentially tailoring your corporate identity to fit your needs.

Or may be you have a new product that you would like to create marketing materials for which will need to include your corporate identity.  WSI can integrate and develop a common theme to all of your business documents.

If you are looking to launch a new product or services and would like to create marketing materials that include your image or identity we can assist you there too.

What is the difference between rights reserved illustration verse royalty free illustration? Why should or shouldn't I use them in my corporate image?

A rights reserved images or artwork means that anyone that uses the artwork must pay a fee for the right to use the image or illustration. Some image providers will only offer rights to an image or illustration for a set number of people or for a limited medium. With a rights reserved illustration, clipart or image you reduce the chance of someone else using the same artwork that you are using.

Typically rights reserved images will only be available for a set amount of time before having to repurchase the image. Rights reserved images shouldn't be used in logos or trademarks as a third party has rights to the image and it's use. If they decide they don't want you to use the image anymore, they can legally request that you discontinue use of the image or illustration.

A royalty free image means that you can purchase the image and use it however you want and for what ever you desire. Royalty free images don't expire, but are also available for anyone to purchase at anytime. If you use a royalty free illustration or graphic in your corporate identity there might be a chance that someone else is also using that very same illustration. This might lead to confusion for your clients and customers. It is important that your corporate image is unique to you.

WSI suggests against using either rights reserved or royalty free illustrations or images in your corporate identity. It is fair better for you to invest in custom illustration for these types of situations.

What is an EPS file? Do I need one for my logo?

An EPS file or encapsulated post script file is a vector based illustration. It is important to have a copy of your logo in EPS format. EPS is a fairly standard format and will allow you to submit your logo to various design companies.  By using an EPS file you can insure your logo will look the same and retain consistency in materials created by different designers.

Vector artwork is also scalable, where other types of artwork are not. Scalable artwork will appear the same no mater what the display size is. If your logo is in a vector format it will appear crisp and clean on something as small as a business card and retain it's clarity when scaled up to the size of a billboard.

WSI provides our clients with EPS versions of any created artwork. This allows our clients to use their custom created artwork for other mediums.
